Sao Paulo (EMTU) [BR] - Extension and a New Model Trolleybus

K. Budach - 03.09.12

Since its opening April 2012, the extension to Jabaquara has been served by two routes:
289: Terminal Piraporinha - Terminal Jabaquara
290: Terminal Diadema - Terminal Jabaquara

There are still not enough trolleybuses available to serve the EMTU’s seven routes. Metra, the operator of EMTU’s trolleybus network, which operates only in the southern suburbs of Sao Paulo, is currently examining several options for the expansion of the fleet. As previously reported (see the report of 28.05.2012) a Scania/CAIO/WEG-Eletra three axle trolleybus, no. 5500, was placed in service this spring, moreover two Volvo/Busscar articulated diesel buses were converted into trolleybuses with WEG-Eletra electrics and operate with the fleet numbers 8150 and 8151.

In July 2012 a new articulated trolleybus arrived, initially for trials. This is totally low-floor in the front section and was produced by Mercedes-Benz/CAIO/WEG-Eletra as a type Millenium III on a Mercedes Benz O 500 UA 2836 Chassis. This is the first trolleybus version of this widely used diesel bus. The vehicle is 18.6m long and has four entrances, of which two are step free in the front section. The vehicle will undergo exhaustive tests before series production begins. The Metra fleet number is 8160.
