On 20 December 2017 the first of 47 new trolleys arrived in the city. These are being supplied by Belkommunmash and are financed through a loan from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). The total procurement is valued at 8.037 million EUR.
The first vehicle of the BKM type 321 has been locally classified as 0001. It commenced trial operations in late December, shortly before the second trolleybus from the same series was delivered in early January. As a novelty in the city, these buses are fitted with a small diesel motor for off-wire maneuvers.
Until autumn 2018 the total number of low-floor trolleybuses in Odessa will rise to 73. Aside from the 47 new trolleys, the local operator also has 10 Bohdan type T70117 dating from 2016 and 16 Trolza type Megapolis from 2009. Although the total trolleybus fleet still consists of about 170 units, only around 90 are in operating condition. Most of the old vehicles are Soviet-built and of the outdated ZiU 682 type, having been delivered between 1987 and 1992. This lot of roughly 80 trolleys is complemented by 40 Ukrainian type YMZ trolleys dating from 1992-2003. From these two series, only about 50 units are in running order.
The trolleybus network was originally established in November 1945 and features a total of 11 lines. It complements the urban tram system with its 22 routes. The proportion of annual passengers carried is about the same, with the trolleybuses having carried 53 million riders in 2016 and the trams 109 million.
